UFC 158: GSP vs Diaz – Post Fight

Well, it turned out to be a over-hyped and very disappointing fight.

St-Pierre did what he does best in forcing the fight to the mat with well timed takedowns and stifling his opponent submission attempts which seemed surprisingly limited to heel hooks. To his credit GSP also held his own on the feet, using angles and foot work to get in and out without ever putting himself in any real danger.

Diaz seemed off the pace and never  got any momentum going and apart from a brief spell in the third round, he failed to find the sort of rhythm that would be crucial if he he was going to stand any chance of pulling off the upset and become UFC Welterweight Champion.

Going into the championship rounds, despite the usual smack talk, there was no sense of urgency from Nick and he seemed resigned to the fact that no matter what, if it went to the judges’ scorecards then there was no way the decision would go against GSP in his home province of Quebec and he continued to mount little offence.

After the inevitable decision did indeed go St-Pierre’s way Diaz announced that unless he could get another fight with Georges then he would be retiring; how likely it is that he follows through with it remains to be seen but despite his failure to shine on the biggest stage of them all when given the opportunity he had craved for so long; it would be a real shame if we never got to see one of the most exciting fighters of recent years in the Octagon again.
